Inside the S.W. Cole Intern Experience

S.W. Cole’s intern program, officially launched in 2021, was designed to provide students with a meaningful, hands-on experience that bridges classroom learning with real world applications and experiences. Our interns gain valuable exposure to industry practices, receive safety and technical training, and earn industry certifications. Our program offers opportunities to connect with experienced professionals, executives, and peers across the organization. It continues to grow as a pipeline for future talent and innovation in the industry.

Intern Testimonials

“My favorite part of being an intern is that no two days have been the same. I have observed soil, concrete, masonry, rebar, and performed both laboratory and geotechnical work. I also love how jobsites represent a wide range of projects, each with unique needs.”
Matthew Robert | Geotechnical Engineering Intern
“I would recommend this internship to anyone looking to get some great field experience. I have learned a lot; I get to meet a lot of new people in the field and start gaining those connections. In school you learn the fact aspect and here you get to do the hands-on part, you get to connect the two”
Alisha Brown | Construction Services Intern
Jules Muyambi Construction Services Intern Bangor, ME
  • Hands-on experience in the lab and field.
  • Ability to obtain industry certifications, from organizations such as the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Northeast Transportation Training and Certification Program (NETTCP).
  • Opportunities to network with people in this field from general contractors to engineers to peers.
  • Attend Lunch & Learns presentations, that cover a variety of topics, like college debt, personal branding, career panels and leadership.

Our marketing intern visited several of our office locations and spoke with fellow interns to capture their authentic experiences firsthand!

This summer we have 20 interns from 15 different schools. This year’s cohort includes five returning students and spans a variety of departments: 14 interns are contributing to Construction Services, 4 are supporting Geotechnical Engineering, and 1 in Safety and 1 in Marketing.

We’re incredibly grateful for the hard work and enthusiasm our interns brought to our team this summer. Each intern had a unique experience shaped by the office they worked in. Many earned their ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician certification, a great achievement! Their days often started early, filled with hands-on fieldwork and lab responsibilities.

“My favorite part is going out into the field and meeting new people along with connecting with the people at S.W. Cole.”
Kirsten Walkup
Construction Services Intern
“I definitely like going into the field the best, it’s something new and different every day, and I am constantly learning.”
Lane Madeja
Construction Services Intern
S.W. Cole also gave me the chance to take the ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade 1 certification, and I’m currently waiting on my results. That certification is a great stepping stone for someone like me who wants to go into engineering. Plus, getting real field experience this early on is something not many future engineers get, and I’m really thankful for that.
Addyson Stadler
Construction Services Intern
“I found the most rewarding part of the internship to be the opportunity to see the actual field testing and the first steps of geotechnical engineering processes.”
Jack Bates
Construction Services Intern
“It’s truly preparing me for what’s next. Being able to learn on the job in a live work environment is building my confidence and skills in a way that classroom learning simply can’t. I’m gaining a clear picture of the entire work process, from start to finish, which is essential for me to step into future roles feeling well-equipped and ready to contribute effectively.”
Khushi Saini
Safety Intern
I’ve had the chance to explore a new industry to me, and I’ve already learned so much in a short time. Every day brings something different, which keeps things exciting and engaging. So far, I’ve had some amazing opportunities like designing intern shirts, creating videos, managing social media posts, attending events, and more. I’ve completed a wide variety of tasks, and each one has taught me something new.”
