Retirement Announcement – Paul Kohler, P.E.

It is with great appreciation that we announce the retirement of Paul F. Kohler, P.E., Senior Vice President and Senior Geotechnical Engineer, marking the conclusion of an extraordinary career with S. W. Cole Engineering, Inc. spanning more than four decades.

Paul began his career with S. W. Cole on May 20, 1985, joining the Bangor office as a geotechnical engineer. In 1993, he transferred to the Gray, Maine office, where he played a pivotal role in managing and growing operations. Over the years, Paul contributed to projects across Maine and the broader region, applying his expertise in geotechnical engineering, subsurface investigations, and foundation design to some of the firm’s most important and complex work.

Throughout his distinguished career, Paul served the firm in numerous leadership roles, including President and Chief Executive Officer from 2009 to 2014, Senior Vice President, and member of the Board of Directors. His leadership helped guide the company through a period of growth and further strengthened its reputation for technical excellence and client service. Even after transitioning from executive leadership, Paul remained actively engaged in geotechnical engineering and client development, supporting project teams and mentoring emerging professionals.

In 2021, Paul transitioned to a part-time role, continuing to share his knowledge and experience while gradually stepping back from full-time responsibilities.

Beyond his contributions within S. W. Cole, Paul has been an active and respected leader in the engineering community. He has held numerous positions with professional organizations, including President of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Maine, as well as leadership roles within the Geoprofessional Business Association (formerly ASFE) and other industry organizations at both the state and national levels.
